Melbourne is located in Brevard County approximately 60 miles southeast of Orlando on the Space Coast along Interstate 95 and midway between Jacksonville and Miami, Florida. Founded in 1867 and formerly called "Crane Creek" Melbourne was named in honor of its first postmaster, Cornthwaite John Hector, an Englishman who had spent much of his life in Melbourne, Australia.
